Swiss National Library relies on Synology NAS
Initial situation and objective
In the past, the Swiss National Library relied on a traditional server and storage solution (direct-attached). Over the time, however, this solution reached its limit and was no longer able to meet storage capacity requirements. A high-capacity and high-performance solution with a flexible expansion option was needed. This solution also had to meet the tough security standards of the Swiss National library. In other words, the data must be stored at least 30 km away from the storage solution. The aim of the project was to establish a reliable storage solution with a massive capacity of at least 400 TB within the space of three months before the previous storage solution reached its limit. The new solution can be expanded way beyond 500 TB in the futur
The current Synology SA3400 NAS series was selected as the new solution for the storage system of the Swiss National Library. It stands out with its flexible expansion options for high-capacity storage solutions. The great price-performance ratio was another reason for choosing this solution. The SA3400 NAS systems by Synology are ideal for large data capacities with their option to expand system capacity by up to 1 petabyte. As with all of the Professional-Line systems by Synology, fast SSD discs and 16TB discs can be used for large capacities within the system. The current data volume of 150 TB and its constant growth place tough demands on the backup solution. The Swiss National Library continues to rely on the tried-and-tested tape drive via LTO technology for this purpose. P5 by Archiware has been used for years. By integrating 10 GB components, large data volumes can be quickly stored on tape. This also meets the security regulations of the Swiss National Library.
The project specifications were discussed in detail with the Swiss National Library prior to starting the work. a&f was therefore able to smoothly implement the measures parallel to local production. All fringe times were used for synchronising the data on the new system. The migration was thus completed quickly and securely.
The Swiss National Library is entirely satisfied with the new storage solution. The cooperation was pleasant and went smoothly. The new system was implemented successfully. The Swiss National Library now has the option to expand its storage solution with little expense at any time in the future.
