Backup to the cloud – improved security and reduced workload for the DEON architecture agency
DEON AG is a dynamic architecture agency active on both a national and international level. In the past, a dedicated Apple service provider was relied upon for IT support. However, because Windows devices are also used, this reached its technical limits.
The IT administrator at DEON AG looked for an ICT service provider who is specialised in mixed system environments (Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS) and invited a&f for a personal introduction by a systems consultant. The synergies were clear to see. After an initial analysis of the existing infrastructure by a&f systems, the backup environment was optimised as an urgent action. This project is now complete and can be seen as an example for the migration of data backup from the local infrastructure to the cloud.
The importance of a functioning backup infrastructure has been widely recognised for some time. The protection of important data is now part of all IT projects. The backup solution previously used at DEON AG required a weekly, sometimes manual, transfer to external backup hard drives by internal IT administrators. a&f systems offered a less time-intensive alternative with a transparent cost structure. It was important to take into account industry-specific characteristics, such as the frequently requested minimum archiving period of ten years for planning data, and the large data volumes traditionally created in architecture agencies.
The perfect solution was quickly found with the «Backup-Housing» solution from a&f systems. DEON AG made a one-time selection of backup hardware and software to suit their requirements. After the purchase, the customer is the legal owner.
Hardware: own backup device in Swiss data centre
The Synology products used by a&f systems are ideal for use as a file server as well as for data backup. This solution offers a great advantage: in the event of a disaster, for example, after an attack by an encryption Trojan (if identified early by the customer), the a&f specialists collect the backup device from the Swiss data centre and hand it over to the customer within a short space of time. This means that it is not necessary to read back data to the internet. With large data quantities, retrieval via the internet connection is only of little use. The restricted transfer rates would cause too long a period of downtime. With the new backup concept (Backup2Cloud), the data is saved to a local hard drive on an hourly basis and once a day it is transferred to the extremely secure and redundant data centre. This represents a significant reduction in workload for the internal IT administrator. He no longer has to deal with the actual data update, perform a weekly device change or an external migration of the hard drives.
Software: regular status information
The newly installed backup software consisting of Archiware P5 or Veeam always provides Lukas Wermelinger, Project Manager and IT administrator at DEON AG, with a good overview of what data has been backed up when, and in which form. He can see which data is flowing between the architecture agency and the data centre. And which versions are currently available for any necessary data recovery.
DEON AG is immediately making use of the latest hardware and software for matters relating to backup infrastructure. The architecture agency is thus ready for anything, even for any system failure.
